National Study Visa

Overview

The Spanish Embassy in Astana and the BLS Kazakhstan Visa Center are authorized to accept visa applications from people residing or studying full-time in the consular district (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, and Tajikistan).

Stays for these purposes of less than 90 days do not require a student visa. Depending on citizenship, a short-term visa may be required (see “Schengen Visas”).

Activities that qualify for a student visa:

  • Higher education (bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree).
  • Secondary education after compulsory secondary school, at an official educational institution in Spain.
  • Mobility programs for secondary and/or upper secondary school students at an officially recognized educational or scientific center.
  • Volunteer services within programs that pursue common goals.

Other types of educational activities:

  • Assistants for conversation practice courses
  • Study of Spanish or languages that are official in Spain (Catalan, Galician, and Basque) in person at official language schools or accredited centers in Spain.
  • Preparatory courses for admission to specialized medical courses.

To accompany the student, the following family members may apply for a visa only after the student has been issued a study visa.

  • Spouse or partner.
  • Minor children or children with disabilities.

A visa obtained by a family member of the student does not entitle them to work.

Due to the entry into force of the new Migration Regulations, new requirements will be introduced on May 20, 2025:

  • Minor applicants cannot apply for a study visa for the purpose of studying in language courses, schools, and other types of educational activities.
  • An exception is made for minor students aged 17 and over who have been admitted to a higher education institution. Applicants must also provide a notarized permission from their parents or guardian, apostilled and translated into Spanish, indicating the educational center and the planned duration of stay in Spain.

Visa application deadline: The study visa must be submitted no later than two months before the start of the course, except in cases where there are valid reasons.

Processing time: If the decision on the stay is positive, the Embassy will issue the visa within one month.
